Each year, hurricane season lasts from June 1st to November 30th. Dangers from these storms include high winds, heavy rain, tornadoes, flooding, and power outages. Depending on a storm’s severity, the City of New Orleans might issue a mandatory evacuation order. If the City issues a mandatory evacuation, all residents and visitors must leave. If an evacuation is not ordered, it's up to you to decide to evacuate or shelter in place.

Property taxes are calculated using the value of the property. This includes both the land and the buildings on it. Typically, tax assessors will value the property every one to five years and charge the owner of record the appropriate rate following the standards set by the taxing authority. In Louisiana, the property tax rates that appear on bills are denominated in millage rate. A mill is equal to $1 of tax for every $1,000 of net assessed taxable value. If your net assessed taxable value is $10,000 and your total millage rate is 50, your taxes owed will be $500.

The Department of Code Enforcement works to eliminate blight in New Orleans by ensuring every building is in compliance with city code and enforcing building codes against properties that are determined to be public nuisances. The purpose is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the general public and the owners and occupants of dwellings and dwelling units used or intended to be used for the purposes of human habitation. The homestead exemption is a tax exemption from property taxes on the first $75,000 of the value of your main residence and applies to all homeowners. To benefit from the homestead exemption, you must submit a completed application form along with the required documentation to your local tax assessor's office. Once your application is approved, the homestead exemption is applied to your property tax bill.
